Narrow the competition & relevance of broad keywords to include local elements and more specific services. For example, instead of going after 'marketing' we work for 'inbound marketing' and 'Denver marketing companies'.

A localized search like that is most likely to come from someone who lives in or near the Denver area and who has a specific need in mind. If your website can fulfill that need for them, then those are the keywords and phrases you ought to compete for.
